The survey was collectively composed by the members of the research team, and after approved by the University of Victoria’s ethics board, we distributed the survey to UVic fine arts undergraduate students. We coordinated with the departmental secretary in the Faculty of Fine Arts office, who sent the link to the FluidSurvey for students to complete. The collaboration with the Faculty of Fine Arts and the assistance of the secretary resulted in a favorable response. The survey was sent to 942 writing, theater, visual arts, and music students, and received 282 responses, yielding a 30 percent response rate. The survey ran from October 15 to November 1, 2013, and questions focused on use of the physical library, services, resources, and virtual access to the library. We also asked about student preference for print or online materials, as well as how students seek inspiration for their creative projects.

Findings

Respondent Profile

The online FluidSurvey was administered over a two-week period to fine arts undergraduate students in all departments excluding Art History and Visual Studies. The majority of respondents were in the final years of their undergraduate degrees, third year or above, though the percentages were almost equally split between upper- and lower-level students (see table 9.1). The largest number of respondents identified as Department of Writing students (34 percent), with Music School students providing the second highest response rate (26 percent). Several of our participants identified as having more than one area of study (see table 9.2).
